A sweep of the Houston Baptist University Huskies extended the Lions’ conference winning streak to eight games this past weekend. Southeastern (33-12, 17-4) traveled to Husky Field in Houston, Texas to take on the Huskies in a double header last Friday night and finished with the series finale on Saturday.

Sophomore outfielder Jacob Seward used the series as a chance to extend a streak of his own. The New Orleans native is currently on a 22-game hitting streak, a mark that ties a school record set by Gavin Fingelson.

Junior pitcher Tate Scioneaux received the starting nod for the Lions in the series opener. The right hander out of Reserve pitched eight innings for Southeastern before being relieved by senior Kyle Keller in the ninth.

The Lions broke through with two runs in the third inning when Seward singled into centerfield to drive in sophomore infielder Carson Crites. An error by Houston allowed junior catcher Chris Eades to cross home plate to put the Lions up 2-0. Junior designated hitter Daniel Midyett drove in the game-winning run with a double in the fifth inning as the Lions took the series opener 3-2 over Houston Baptist.

Scioneaux earned the win to advance to 6-2, while Keller pitched a scoreless inning to secure his second save of the season.

While game one of the series was a low scoring contest, the Southeastern bats came alive in game two with 14 total hits. The Lions scored in four separate innings, including three runs in the seventh inning, to take game two 6-1. Junior pitcher Jake Johnson was awarded the win to improve to 8-1, while freshman Kade Granier pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

Saturday’s matchup was postponed several hours due to inclement weather, something Southeastern has become accustomed to this season. The Lions continued their domination of HBU once the rain subsided as Southeastern tied a season high for hits in a game. Southeastern batted 21 hits, bringing home 15 runs in the process. In a game that lasted seven innings, Southeastern scored in all but one inning in a 15-4 victory over the Huskies. Junior pitcher Kyle Cedotal fanned seven batters in seven innings to pitch the complete game.

Game three featured several members of the Lions’ squad earning multi-hit performances. Seward had five hits in five at-bats, while senior infielder Kevin Carr had four hits. Two Lions hit homeruns with Carr hitting a three-run homerun in the second inning and Eades smashing a solo shot over the left-center wall during the fourth inning.

Seward was awarded by the conference after a week full of impressive at-bats. The outfielder was named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week for the second time this season in large part to multi-hit performances in all four games last week. In all, Seward was (11-for-16) last week and did not strike out once.

Southeastern will next play Tuesday, April 28 when the Lions head to New Orleans to take on Tulane. The Lions will return home this weekend in a series against conference foe Lamar.
