The trip thus far for the Lady Lions

The Lady Lions basketball team went head to head with two local opponents, McNeese State University and Northwestern State University, but fell short by finishing with two conference losses.

On Wednesday, January 27, the Lady Lions (3-15, 2-5 Southland) traveled to Lake Charles to take on the Cowgirls. The game began in favor of the Lady Lions with a three-pointer made by senior guard Erica Hernandez, but soon after, McNeese took a two-point lead of 3-5 in the eighth minute. Although McNeese continued to lead until the last few minutes of the first, the Lady Lions did not let this set them back. In the fourth minute, a successful layup was made by freshman forward Kyle Felton, putting the team back into the game at 11-11. From there, the Lady Lions took the lead into the second, finishing the first at 22-19. In the second, the team continued to lead with multiple successful plays made by Hernandez, senior forward Nanna Pool and sophomore guard Taylin Underwood. The team finished the second at 41-37. In the third, the team stayed in the lead until the fifth minute where Cowgirl junior guard Amber Donnes made a three-pointer, putting McNeese in the lead at 50-52. The Lady Lions staggered behind the Cowgirls by a ten-point gap at the end of third. In the fourth, the point gap widened between the two teams, and the Lady Lions were never able to regain the lead by the end, finishing at 79-96.

Looking back at this game, Underwood felt that although the team did well in the first two quarters, they fell short after the half.

“We did our best,” said Underwood. “We played two quarters together, but [after] we just got outplayed.”

Underwood also reflected on how the team could improve from this point.

“We just have to finish the game and play all four quarters together,” said Underwood. “I definitely want to see us reach our goal, which is obviously to make it to the tournament. We just have to turn it around now while we still can.”

On Saturday, January 30, the team (3-16, 2-6 Southland) continued its four-game road trip by heading to Natchitoches to face the Lady Demons. NSU took the lead in the first until the sixth minute when Underwood made a good three-pointer, tying up the score 6-6. From there, the team took a two-point lead with a good jumper made by Hernandez in the fourth minute, but was unable to keep ahead of the Lady Demons, finishing the first 13-22. The Lady Lions were not able to regain the lead for the remainder of the game, finishing at the final score of 62-82.

Reflecting on the performance, Pool felt that the team lacked but still kept at it until the end.

“We could’ve done better, but as we kept playing, we kept it going,” said Pool.

Despite their loss, Pool felt that the best part of it all was the love for the game.

“The greatest moments are when we are playing as a team and we’re laughing while we’re having fun,” said Pool.

From here, Head Coach Yolanda Moore would like to see the team improve defensively and offensively and finish to the end.

“We have to improve defensively and be able to stop people and be able to execute on offense, get rebounds and put together a whole game on both sides of the ball,” said Moore.

The team will conclude its four-game road trip at University of Central Arkansas on Wednesday, February 3 at 7:00 p.m. For more information about the Lady Lions, visit lionsports.net.
