Casey Peacock has been a defense and forward for the Lady Lions soccer team for the past four years. The senior criminal justice and political science major has used her competitive spirit to excel in making her athletic dreams come true despite a few obstacles.

In the Lady Lions victory against Jackson State University, Peacock took four shots. Two of which were on goal after missing the past two seasons due to injuries.

“I feel like I’m starting my college career over,” said Peacock. “My whole team is new and I’m playing a new position. I don’t feel like I have to prove anything to anyone. I feel like I have to prove to myself that despite all that I’ve been through, I can still finish.”

Soccer Head Coach Blake Hornbuckle describes Peacock as a determined player who brings a “competitive spirit” to the game and stated that he is happy for her return to the field.

“This shows she has overcome injury and worked extremely hard, both physically and mentally, to play at a high level again,” said Hornbuckle. “The team will benefit from Casey’s ability to hold the ball up top and win balls in the air.”

According to Peacock, in 2014 she tore her ACL at practice when her teammate slid into her. In early 2015, she was rehabbing the same knee and it tore again.

“I was still at SLU and I still attended classes a week after surgery both times,” said Peacock. “I came to every practice and filmed all of the games. The first time I felt like I lost who I was because I’ve never not had soccer before. That first season in 2014, I felt really lost.”

Peacock’s love for soccer began as a child because of her mom’s passion for athletics. While growing up, Peacock played softball, basketball, swimming and track.

“I’ve always had a dream as a little kid to play division one soccer,” said Peacock. “I’m super competitive and I love sports. I only play the other sports for fun.”

Following her recovery after the two injuries, Peacock continued to rehab for five days a week and didn’t change her diet.

“I kept a balance of healthy foods, but I’ll never give up ice cream,” said Peacock. “I’m not perfect by any means, but I do try to eat well as much as I can.”

Despite Peacock’s busy schedule consisting of work, athletics and school, she finds time to engage in hobbies.

“To relax, I like to paint and cook healthy meals like grilled chicken and salmon,” said Peacock.

Throughout her time as a Lady Lions soccer player, Peacock has earned the Southland Conference Fall Commissioner’s Honor Roll in 2013, 2014 and 2015. In 2013, she earned three awards: CoSIDA Academic All-District VI First Team, Southland Conference All-Academic First Team and Southland Conference All-Tournament First Team. According to Peacock, The CoSIDA academic award is what she is the most proud of.

“School for me has always been and always will be a priority,” said Peacock. “I want to go to law school, so I really pride myself on grades.”

Through Peacock’s official return, the support of her teammates and friends has reawakened her love for soccer.

“My team has been the biggest help through all of this, I wouldn’t be here without them,” said Peacock. “I would’ve quit one hundred times without them. I’m happy to be here and I’m still glad I’m here at Southeastern.”
