Elyssa Purcell, a red shirt freshman and setter, has recorded back to back triple-doubles in past games for the Lady Lions volleyball team. Purcell’s triple-double performances were her third and fourth of the season. Four triple-doubles rank in the Top-5 nationally, helping the Lady Lions break an 11-match losing streak on Thursday, Sept. 22 against Lamar. Purcell accomplished 10 kills, 23 assists and 10 digs. In her first season with the Lady Lions she was named to the Jaguar Invitational All-Tournament Team earlier this season. The Alvin, Texas native is the daughter of John and Melinda Purcell and has one sister, Kelsey Purcell. This is the kinesiology major’s first year at the university.

The Lion’s Roar: Describe your recent triple-doubles.

Elyssa Purcell: Triple double is three things. I had 10 kills, 23 assists and 10 digs. It really helped with my stats.

TLR: Why is volleyball your sport of choice?

EP: I’ve played pretty much everything including soccer, softball and baseball. I started playing volleyball in fifth grade and I just love it.

TLR: How does it feel to be athlete of the month?

EP: It’s a great recognition, it means a lot to me coming in as a transfer student from UCL. I didn’t have a great year there.

TLR: What brought you to play for Southeastern Louisiana University?

EP: They only had one setter, so I knew that I would probably get to play this year. I also really like the location; it is only five hours away from home compared to Orlando, which is over 20 hours away.

TLR: Who inspires you the most?

EP: My dad because he is encouraging. He is always there through the good times and especially in the hard times. He is always making me feel good and he always motivates me.

TLR: What is your future plans?

EP: My future plans are to get a degree in Kinesiology, and possibly play professional volleyball. It all depends on how everything works out after school.

TLR: What is your greatest accomplishment?

EP: Getting to be All-American in high school.

TLR: What’s the most challenging thing about being a student athlete?

EP: Balancing school and homework, you have to learn how to do homework at the airports and while you’re in your hotel room.

TLR: What do you do on your free time?

EP: I work out and I also shop.
