Students reunite once again for the start of fall intramurals

The fall Intramural Sports are set for this semester, and students are ready to play the sports that they love on their campus.

The fall Intramurals Sports are outdoor soccer, indoor volleyball and flag football. Students get to create their own schedule for the games that they will play.

“They have to select at least three or four times a week that they will play,” said Jean Bernard, assistant director of guest services for Recreational Sports & Wellness. “Leagues only play on certain days. For flag football, we have our Greek leagues and women’s leagues playing on Monday and Wednesday nights while our men and coed leagues only play on Tuesdays and Thursdays.”

According to Bernard, games might only be postponed by stormy weather that would cause the ground to become wet.

“Luckily our seasons end around the first week in November, so we never have to deal with the cold,” said Bernard.

The captain’s meeting was held last Wednesday for all three sports. A new change to the payment for intramurals is that now there is a team-fee structure instead of individual paying for fees.

Intramurals usually have a lot of participants each semester, but the Pennington Student Activity Center is looking to have even more students get involved.

“The last two years or so, it has been between 600 and 700 per semester,” said Bernard. “We are trying to improve.”

Students enjoy the intramurals as a chance to do an extracurricular activity that helps friends to bond together.

“It’s always been a great experience,” said sophomore business major Shawn Guercio whose soccer team won the championship last year. “You get to interact with your classmates and also make some new friends and have a good time.”

Most students who play intramurals played sports in high school and want to keep up their game and stay active.

“I always really liked playing sports, so it’s a way for me to get back into playing competitive sports because I actually miss that from high school,” said sophomore kinesiology major Madison Jones. “Playing real games, you feel like you’re trying to work towards something.”

Not only do students get the satisfaction of playing sports, but they also get to meet other students and make new friends while playing.

“I definitely like the fact that I get to meet new people,” said senior marketing major Drew Markham. “It’s really why I come out here to play.”

Students can invite their friends to come watch them play and cheer them on at games. However, fans must not interfere with the games themselves, or they could cost their friends a win.

“Last year, we had about 15 fans come out there every game,” said Markham. “So, we had a nice crowd.”
