Extended Studies offers film and art classes

The Division of Extended Studies is offering two new non-credit art classes this fall. In addition to the seven other Personal Enrichment art courses taught this semester, Southeastern is now offering the classes Basic Film Acting and Introduction to Stained Glass.

“That is the value of Extended Studies,” said Thomas Dawsey, Marketing & Recruiting Manager for Extended Studies. “It reaches all audiences and opens possibilities for career and personal enrichment. If someone is unsure how new careers may fit their skills, these short term classes make an ideal initial experience.”

Current Southeastern students as well as community individuals and groups are welcome to register for these non-credit courses.

The Basic Film Acting course, according to Dawsey, is a reaction to the professional film productions that have come to Livingston and the surrounding parishes. The Livingston Economic Development Committee and Extended Studies agreed that this type of class might be a “workforce development opportunity.”

The Basic Film Acting class will be taught on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Hammond from Sept. 28 through Oct. 26. The course will also be offered in Walker on Tuesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  The class in Walker will begin on Oct. 11 and taught until Nov. 8. The cost of the class is $115 in each location. This Basic Film Acting is a 10-hour non-credit course that will offer Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits, and will be taught by faculty members Dr. James Winter and Mr. Chad Winters.

“Students will be presented with film acting skills as well as an introduction to technical challenges,” said Dawsey. “Guest speakers will discuss current work opportunities, and how to break into actual film acting work.”

“Stained Glass is enjoying a come-back in popularity, and this is one of the few opportunities to learn this technique.”

Taught by Mr. Gene Duvic, the Introduction to Stained Glass is a two-week course offered twice this semester in Mandeville and once this semester in Walker.  In Mandeville, session one will be from Sept. 12 to Sept 26 on Mondays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., and session two will be from Oct. 12 to Oct. 26 on Wednesdays from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

In Walker, Introduction to Stained Glass will be held from Nov. 1 to Nov. 15 on Mondays from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The cost of these courses is $150 per class.

Students will have the chance to create their own stained glass projects according to the Extended Studies web site and learn methods and tools used to complete a stained glass panel in different styles.

“Participants for Extended Studies non-credit courses included home school studies and adults from all walks of life,” said Dawsey. “It seems that those interested in non-credit courses are students for life.”
