Greek Week begins with volleyball tournament

With the completion of the annual Greek Volleyball tournament, Greek Week 2013 has officially begun.
The tournament took place on the the Greek Village Quad on Sunday, March 10 from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Five teams competed in a total of seventeen games, with team Alpha Sigma Tau A, made of of members from Alpha Sigma Tau, Kappa Alpha Order, Pi Kappa Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi, coming out on top as the tournament champions.
Christopher Simoneaux, a junior marketing major, Delta Tau Delta member and Secretary of the Order of Omega helped coordinate the tournament.
“We had a few bumps in the beginning, but once we got past those we were rolling,” said Simoneaux. “It’s double elimination this year, so it took a little bit longer, but we had more Greek Participation. We had to get waivers set, and some people were missing at first but they showed up, so everything worked out.”
About midway through the tournament, the wind picked up and blew some canopies over and some dark clouds in. Many were worried that the tournament would have to be canceled due to rain, but Order of Omega had a back up plan.
“We have to deal with the weather: That you can’t really control,” said Simoneaux. “We had the Pennington on standby in case it rains.”
Order of Omega is overseeing this year’s Greek Week, and under their rule, many things have changed: Not only events but also the attitude towards being Greek.
“We wanted to do more campus wide events to show that we are Greek, our values, what we stand for and kill the stereotypes about college Greek Life,” said Simoneaux. “Our campus really needs to know what we’re really all about. We are good people, we do good work for the community, we have fun and we compete. That’s life, that’s competition.”
