Angry Birds to be brought to life

Inspired by the popular Angry Birds game, KSLU Radio students will raise money for their program by bringing the game from the screens of iPhones and iPads to the War Memorial Student Union Park.
The game is a creative twist on KSLU’s annual fund drive, which is scheduled for Aug. 27-28 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The drive is coordinated by Chad Pierce, development director of KSLU.
“One thing that we do every year with our drives is try to increase the donations made by Southeastern students,” said Pierce. “In the past we’ve taken donations for T-shirts, auctioned off KSLU merchandise and we’ve had people DJ for a day. So, I got this idea based on the popularity of Angry Birds, which has kind of dwindled at this point but still we figured that this would be a cool idea.”
Like the game, students will be shooting at three targets painted to resemble green pigs. However, instead of using birds and a massive slingshot, students will be shooting water balloons from a hand slingshot. Players will pay $1 per balloon or $5 for six balloons and compete for a variety prizes, like KSLU T-shirts, ink pens and koozies. The grand prize is an Asus Eee Pad Transformer tablet donated by Best Buy.
“We’ll have one tub full of balloons and two staff members filling them as we go so that we’ll never run out,” said Pierce. “We’ll have music out there and someone on a microphone carnival barking at people to get them over there and take a shot. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We’re expecting a lot of people to turn out. Everyone that we’ve talked to about this has gone ‘oh my god, that sounds like so much fun, I cannot wait to do that.’ We’ve never done anything like this before and we’re trying to cover it from every single angle.”
According to Pierce, if the drive generates $400-$500 it will be considered a success.
“If you think about it, getting $500 from college students is a pretty big deal,” said Pierce.
