    Shattered Illusions

When people attend concerts, they usually expect a certain environment and audience, depending upon the artists being presented. I attended the first KSLU Battle of the Bands last September without knowing any of the bands beforehand, and I went into the second event no differently.
I must say I have now been impressed twice by the local talent presented at the Battle of the Bands. I have to give KSLU their props for their selections in both the first and second Battle of the Bands. It was refreshing to hear something different, and I was pleased to find out all of the bands played their original songs.
Battle of the Bands was located at Augustine’s Bar, offering the perfect size, space and feel for the KSLU event. The university radio station used the same place to present the five bands they selected for the competition both in the fall and spring semesters. From what I gathered, there were something for just about everyone to enjoy, whether they liked the music, being around friends or just hanging out at the bar.
As an audience member of both Battle of the Bands events, I can say it was obvious that KSLU had their stuff together this time around. Although last semester’s event was still enjoyable, it was less organized, and the transitions between bands was much longer. This time the event seemed to go by faster, probably due to a comedic duo dressed as Han Solo and Princess Leia who served as the night’s hosts and the speedier set-up between bands.
For the second Battle of the Bands competition, the competitors were Yo, Picasso; Bad Moon Lander; First Fracture; Better by Design and the Telegraph Salesmen. Of these five bands, some were clearly better than others, and some had larger fanbases in attendance. Although the winners, The Telegraph Salesmen, weren’t my personal favorite, I did like their uniqueness. I think all of the bands have bright futures ahead of them.
I appreciated getting to hear the winners of the first Battle of the Bands perform again. Will Vance and the Kinfolk put on a great show that included new songs, and they announced their album release, which will take place Saturday, May 10 at the Ghost Light venue. It was nice to see that this event helped to propel this group into further popularity and a full album. I hope that in the future KSLU continues to bring back previous winners to show off their success.
My only real criticism is that the audience should have a greater say in who the winner should be. Although The Telegraph Salesmen was good at livening up the crowd at the end of the night, I do question whether the amount of alcohol many people had consumed had any effect on the results. I’m not saying people shouldn’t drink at the event, but I could see having this event during the daytime, with a more sober crowd having a different reaction to the bands and possibly different winners.
