Alpha Psi Omega to present comedy, horror back-to-back

The second Southeastern Theatre production of the semester, “An Evening of One Acts,” is being designed, acted, managed and directed by students who all have theatre faculty mentoring them in the processes of the show.
The members of the production team and the actors are all in the theatre honorary society Alpha Psi Omega. Performances will take place Tuesday, Nov. 19 through Friday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. in the Vonnie Borden Theatre.
The two one-acts are comedy “Who Am I This Time?” by Kurt Vonnegut and ghost story “The Turn of the Screw” based on the story by Henry James and adapted by Jeffery Hatcher. “Who Am I This Time?” will be directed by Veronica Gutierrez, and “The Turn of the Screw” will be directed by Chelsea Krause.
“The slot for the second main stage show was determined by the faculty last spring,” said Gutierrez, a junior majoring in general studies with a concentration in theatre. “Normally it would have been faculty selecting the shows, but the theatre honorary Alpha Psi Omega and faculty collaborated on a competition that would determine who would direct. The competition was that students who met certain requirements would submit a resume, a list of five plays they would seriously consider staging with a brief synopsis and a letter stating why they believed they should direct. Among the students who submitted, Chelsea and I were chosen as finalists.”
After both went through interviews and presented details of their visions to the faculty, it was decided that both should have the opportunity to direct a piece. Each would direct a one-act, which the Southeastern Theatre program has not done in a while.
“They are short and to the point, which is very different from multiple act plays,” said Chelsea Krause, a senior majoring in marketing and general studies with a theatre concentration. “They also get a full evening of completely different forms of theater as well as different types of performance. Also, we’re mixing genres. Hers is a comedy, and mine is a horror.  It’s a departure from anything we’ve really done before, so I think the audience will like it.”
“It’s like going to a double feature at the movies where you get two in one,” said Gutierrez. “They will experience not one, but two very different stories, and be sucked into two worlds. Granted, personally I love a good multiple act show, but two full length shows is something not often done. The shows are long enough to establish a connection with the characters and short enough to keep the audience entertained and focused without worrying about whether or not their last text sent.”
Gutierrez said that preparation has been intense because she had to cast 10 roles for her one act.
The “Who Am I This Time?” cast is as follows: high school senior Caleb Theriot as Newt,  James LeJeune as Harry Nash, Kayla Wilson as Helene Shaw, Janna Baza as Miss Swayer, Raven Price as Mary, Kennedy Lejeune as Nancy, Jessica Baronich as Catherine, Seth Walker as George and Avonte Skinner as Sam.
“From auditions I’ve had quite the journey,” said Gutierrez. “With a cast of 10 potential roles, I knew I’d have my work cut out for me. The majority of my selected actors were new to the stage, so it was important that I really work with them closely and develop their characters. It was, admittedly, a bit intimidating thinking about the situation, but I was up for the challenge to structure my show as soon as I could get them in a rehearsal space.”
The “Turn of the Screw” cast is as follows: MJ Ricks as Man and Miranda Miller as Woman.
Tickets for the performances will be available at the Box Office in D Vickers Hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays or one hour before performances.
