Flipside, a hip hop dance group founded in 2005, will be hosting auditions for the 2014 team on Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pennington Student Activity Center. The group performs at talent shows, culture nights and other events hosted by organizations on campus.
Registration can be done on-site and includes a $5 fee. Auditions are open to all genders and races. Participants should arrive in appropriate dance attire and comfortable shoes. Jeans and black sole shoes will not be permitted.
The auditions will start with registration and warm up from 7:30-8:00 p.m. and 8:00-9:15 p.m. Choreography will be taught to those trying out, and then the potential team members will be separated into groups to perform the number for the older members.
According to public relations director and member of Flipside, Michaela Thanars, this method allows veteran members to determine how quickly those auditioning can learn material .
“This will allow us to see how quickly they can pick up choreography and how well they perform in a short time frame,” said Thanars.
The performances will last until 9:45 p.m. New members will be chosen at the end of all sessions.
According to Thanars, the team is looking for students who are not afraid to perform and have fun.
“We are looking for students who love to dance, are willing to work hard, have fun with dance and are not afraid of dancing in front of their peers,” she said.
Tyron’E Hawkins shared her experiences as a member.
“My experience with the team has definitely helped me grow as a dancer. I’ve expanded my skills and dance styles,” said Hawkins. “I’ve dabbled in choreography and teaching. I love that it’s just a great way to meet people, make friends and just get out there and have fun entertaining a crowd.”
Members benefit from supportive audiences and physical activity.
“It’s a chance to dance. Everyone, in their own right, is a dancer,” added Hawkins. “We have a great time, and the crowd always loves us. It’s a great extracurricular activity and even a workout.”
According to Thanars the team is doing well and is looking to add some new faces to contribute different dance styles to the program.
“We consider Flipside to be a second family,” said Thanars. “Everyone on our team has created a great bond over the fall semester. We would really love to add a number of fresh faces and personalities to our organization and add more dance styles and new ideas to our performances.”
