Faculty recital to be hosted inside Pottle Music Building

Over the next few weeks, several faculty members will make music as part of Fanfare in three different faculty recitals. “Musical Treasures for Piano and Strings” and “Joy Ratliff and Friends: Songs from WWII” and Logan’s Place’s faculty recital will both be held within a week of each other and will offer a variety of music for students and visitors to appreciate.

“Faculty recitals, especially those collaborative in nature, are the best way for our own students to see their own teachers involved as highly-skilled and talented performers themselves,” said Dr. Kenneth Boulton, dean of the department of Fine and Performing Arts. “Also, members of our faculty genuinely enjoy working and performing in tandem with each other.”

The performers in “Musical Treasures” will be Jivka Jeleva on violin, Unkyoung Kim on violin and viola, Daniel Cassin on cello, Stefka Madere on violin, John Madere on bass and Dr. Henry Jones on piano.

“The selection process was done in collaboration with Dr. Kenneth Boulton, currently dean of the Fine and Performing Arts Department,” said Daniel Cassin. “The focus of the program is to feature members of the school of music string and keyboard faculty. All are teachers at Southeastern with the exception of Stefka Madere, who is guest artist. For the past several weeks, we have all been meeting at various times to rehearse our program.”

According to Cassin, the recital theme “Musical Treasures for Strings and Piano” was selected first, and then well-known works by Handel, Faure and Schubert were chosen.

“We wanted to feature music that would please our audience,” said Cassin. “We are all honored and excited to be a part of this first week of the Fanfare series of events.”

The music faculty expressed excitement about performing for students and being able to teach through performance instead of words.

“In our classrooms, we as instructors are attempting to impart the very skills that will help our students to become fine, self-sufficient performers and interpreters of music,” said Cassin. “Many of them will likely become teachers themselves. Having an opportunity to see their faculty perform, allows students a window from which to witness and experience the application of many of the very concepts that we hope to convey during our classes.”

The “Musical Treasures for Strings and Piano” faculty recital will take place on Monday, Oct. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Pottle Auditorium. “Joy Ratliff and Friends: Songs of WWII” will take place on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 4:00 p.m. in the Columbia Theatre Conference Center.

Joining Ratliff will be Henry Jones on piano, Zakkary Garner on guitar and saxophone and Kevin Estoque on drums. The other singers will be Lois Ball Anglin, as well as students Kimberly Dupre and Mindy Guidroz.

Logan Place will be performing his faculty recital on trumpet on Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pottle Auditiorium.
