The Guitar Festival will close with an ensemble of music students and two guest speakers, bringing an end to this season’s testament to the instrument.
The ensemble will perform Monday, April 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Pottle Auditorium. The ensemble will consist of music majors and two guest speakers.
“The concert will feature music for guitar and violin, and combinations of two, three, four and 10 guitars,” said Patrick Kerber, guitar instructor and festival coordinator. “The music will range from the Italian Baroque to music of the 20th Century from Brazil and Spain.”
The performers are required to play in the ensemble as part of a music class. The guest performers, Hristo Balev, an alumnus, and Constanta Lungu, a music major, were invited to play “because they have proven themselves as outstanding performers who enjoy playing,” according to Kerber.
Kerber feels the Guitar Festival allows students to be exposed to guitar-based music outside of the mainstream pop genre. Additionally, the ensemble provides invaluable experience to music majors.
“It serves the university’s purpose of education and providing the community and students with unique concerts and presentations that are otherwise difficult to find,” said Kerber.
To Kerber, the performance that stood out the most was the flamenco ensemble.
“The flamenco ensemble Ven Pa’ Ca brought a unique, modern presentation of the traditional Spanish folk art–very dynamic with dancing, percussion and the modern twist of a saxophone,” said Kerber.
