Tomorrow evening, the campus chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) will kick off Black History Month with a celebration of African culture in the Student Union Theater.
“The primary topic of the event is putting a new spin on old African culture,” said Joshua Allen, a junior communications major and the NAACP’s public relations officer. “There’ll be monologues, interpretive dance and songs performed by our members.”
The celebration will be held at 7 p.m. and is open to all students, faculty and staff. The Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs will provide food for guests.
“We feel the NAACP is about unifying all races and people,” said Allen. “We feel it is important to share with the student body where we come from and show that it hasn’t been lost over the decades.”
According to Allen, the NAACP will host two more events for Black History Month: Chocolate Conversation on, Feb. 29 and the NAACP Talent show. Chocolate Conversation will be a discussion of the perceived differences between darker and lighter skin colors of African-Americans. Chocolate Conversations is set for Feb. 29. The date of the talent show is set to take place on March 21.
