The Hammond Downtown Development District will offer a variety of entertainment and special deals from local merchants in hopes that the entire community will gather for an evening under the stars.

The 10th Annual Starry November Night will be held throughout downtown Hammond on Friday, Nov. 14 beginning at 6 p.m.

“This is a Downtown Development District Signature Event,” said Terry Lynn Smith, the executive director for the Hammond DDD. “It’s grown. We added horse and carriage rides. We added star-gazing [with the Pontchartrain Astronomy Society] as we went along. One of the first things we did was put the snow down in our backyard, which is a hugely active event for children and parents.”

Aside from the variety of family entertainment, the Hammond DDD encourages everyone to visit the various shops and businesses in the downtown area.

“The merchants are the incredible part of the event that adds every year to the strength of the success of the events we have, especially Starry,” said Smith. “They are people that are very excited to welcome people into their shops. Starry November Night kicks off the seasonal shopping for our area. There’s a lot of excitement within the stores. They add so much.”

The celebration will include Hammond’s art and wine stroll. Anyone 21 and older with a valid ID who would like to participate in the wine tasting can purchase a wristband and a light-up glass for $20. The tent for wristbands will be set up at the Hammond DDD building at 2 West Thomas Ave. across from the Hammond Post Office.

“The City Council lifted the open container ordinance; the ordinance that tells you [that] you can’t have alcohol on the streets,” said Smith. “That was lifted, which they do for everybody’s events who ask.”

In addition to the wine stroll for adults, several family activities will be offered. Santa Claus is coming to town for a visit with the children of Hammond. Santa will make an appearance in his new red suit in front of the Children’s Discovery Center.

“Everybody should attend,” said Smith. “It’s fun to watch the children. Go into the merchant’s places. We have several new businesses downtown. The restaurants are awesome. The bars are great. Everybody’s getting ready to celebrate.”

Residents in the Hammond area, including Southeastern students, faculty, staff and their families, are encouraged to attend. Downtown will be decorated like a winter wonderland to usher in the holidays as a community.

“The City of Hammond is very gracious about decorating downtown for the Starry November Night event,” said Smith. “They honor all the people that come down here and enjoy the beautiful lights. They are delighted to be able to help us celebrate Starry November Night and kick off the holiday season downtown with all the lights.”
