We all have heard of, and so many of us have read, “Harry Potter,” “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent.” These popular series have raged through campuses across the country, and they have even leaped off the pages of books and onto the big screen. 

The reality of the average reader’s life, though, is that there are so many series we don’t hear of. They aren’t being talked about or thrown onto our Facebook newsfeed, and so are therefore hard to discover. As someone who loves a good story, I feel it necessary to begin sharing another must-read series—the “Outlander” series by Diana Gaboldon.

Some have possibly heard of this series, as Starz has created a television show from it. Despite this, I find the books are still largely unrecognized. Considering the raw talent of Gaboldon, this needs to be changed. 

When I began “Outlander,” I was a bit skeptical of the story and my care to even continue. As I made my way through, though, I could not put the book down. Or the second book for that matter.

The series follows a character, Claire Beauchamp, who falls back in time to 1700s Scotland. Claire is a British Army nurse married to a respectable historian in the 1900s when she finds herself suddenly in an unknown and scary time, where her own life and freedom are at danger. Here she finds a Scottish warrior, Jamie Fraser, who she eventually marries to save herself. This is the beginning of an adventure that never ends. 

I am constantly surprised by the plot Gaboldon creates for these characters. She is not only able to write a story that draws you in, but she does it in such a way that you feel as if you know the characters and are in the book itself. 

Don’t allow the seemingly cheesy plot of time travel and love to stop you from reading these books. It fits perfectly for women and men. There are stories of love, adventure and the human experience. To make it even better, you really will learn about historical Scotland.

For those looking for a new series to read, try “Outlander.” And don’t stop.
