Dance auditions for Bayourella to be held in May

The university’s very own dance company will be hosting auditions Friday, May 6 in the dance studio in the kinesiology building from 9 to 10 a.m. The production is called “Bayourella: A Story of Forgiveness.” It is based off of the original story of Cinderella, but with a southern twist. They are looking for contemporary dancers whom do not need to be trained in technique.

The fairy godmother we know will instead be Bayourella’s grandmother who passed away and she will be called Ghost Maw Maw. Another twist will  be tense agree agreement that instead of a slipper being lost and the prince searching the town for a foot that will fit it, the “Prince” and Bayourella will share a meaningful embrace and he will search the town for the girl who fits in his arms perfectly.

Like the original fairy tale, there will be an evil stepmother and stepsister, but the production will explain how the stepmother became so mean.

“I wanted to take on the perspective of why these people were so bitter to Cinderella,” said artistic director of the Dance Performance Project and dance instructor Keith Costa. “What did the stepmother go through to make her so hateful?”

The story will consist of a variety of southern music like Zydeco, Bluegrass, Folk and some Hymns. Musicians are needed as well as dancers, especially musicians who are comfortable with making original songs.

“There will possibly be some original compositions and some music that will be recorded as well as played that has already been created in the past,” said Costa. “There will be a whole lot of diversity in the environment that we create. We are looking for musicians that are comfortable with playing original compositions and the instruments such as the banjo, the fiddle, the accordion and things that aren’t used very often.”

If chosen to be a dancer in this production, you will be a part of The Dance Performance Project and they meet every Tuesday and Thursday between 2 and 4 p.m. Dance 300 is a dance technique. Class students will have to register for in the Fall of 2017, as well as a dance technique class.

“It is two hours you receive for exploring dance and your time and effort of performing with us,” said Costa. “You get rewarded with a grade which I think is very nice. Anything where you can learn, enjoy it and it’s a class, register for it. You should want to do that.”

The first two days students have classes on Monday and Tuesday in the fall will be another audition for incoming students at the university and for any students that did not hear about auditions this semester. Any student interested in being a dancer, or any musician interested in being a part of this production that has more questions can contact Keith Costa at [email protected].
