Modern society has become a society of convenience. We can throw something in the microwave and voilà : dinner! We can sit on our couch all day long and do anything we need to with the press of a button. Tired of this show? Here's a remote. If you want to text your boo-thing, you have your phone. We can literally sit in one place for hours watching Netflix, sending texts, browsing Facebook and snacking on potato chips. Is there anything wrong with this picture? I mean, besides the fact that the same time all of these conveniences and processed foods came out was when gym memberships and diet plans were introduced as well. When life was not so convenient and people spent their days hunting and gathering, working in the fields and planning how to kill that big angry animal for some meat that evening, health was not as much as an issue. This is not only because all the food consumed was natural from the earth or animals, but the people spent all day moving and in turn, working their bodies. There's a reason you don't see many pictures of fat cavemen or obese farmers. Let me paint a quick picture for you. Within the same decade that Pizza Hut and Duncan Hines cake came out, so did diet soft drinks, Sweet N' Low and the cabbage soup diet. The next decade Pop Tarts and Weight Watchers emerged. The list goes on. In our society the grocery store is overflowing with processed foods that don't give us the nutrients we need. This is because processed food modifies the natural components of food which changes the way they work and digest inside our bodies. Some nutrients are actually stripped from the foods during these processes and are replaced with preservatives. Why would you want to eat something that's been preserved anyway? Fresh food is a more logical and delicious choice. Let's take a look at bread. Whole grains start as seeds that have three layers: endosperm, bran and germ. This whole grain can be used to make natural whole grain bread or ground into whole flour. The most commonly used flour is white flour. White flour comes from the same place as whole flour but the bran and germ have been removed. We are left with the endosperm. We lost all the nutrients just so manufacturers can inject them back into the bread. That's not natural. It's also important to know that most white bread is bleached. This does not mean we should throw out our televisions or go on strike against the cafeteria because they use white bread. We need to acknowledge the society we live in and the dangers what convenience has actually caused to our health. No, don't start running around in a loin cloth and hunt big furry mammals, although your physique probably will improve. We don't need to reject our society, but change the way we live in it. Skip that McDonald's line. Move daily-our bodies were not meant to sit in a chair all day. Grab the grilled chicken and vegetables instead of the burgers and fries. You're allowed to eat that bowl of ice cream, but then skip that piece of cake the next day. It's important to know what we are putting into our bodies. We only have one body we are forced to live in the rest of our lives, so why not get as comfortable as possible? We won't be comfortable in our bodies if we're bloated from overeating or weak from laziness. We need to work our muscles, become powerful and energized by the good foods we fill ourselves with. If you're hungry, it is OK to eat. It means you're running low on fuel. Just grab that banana instead of that snack from the vending machine. Yes, the vending machine is often more convenient, but that is why we need to plan ahead and bring a healthy snack with us to work or class. Food is a beautiful thing and a necessity to life. We bond over food and have some of the best conversations over meals. This is why we need to choose the food that will sustain us, not send us into a state of grogginess.
