Keep the Christmas season after Thanksgiving

    Morgan Ledet's Headshot

Like many other Americans, Christmas is one of my favorite holidays. Christmas is celebrated in the month of December. You think most people know this, but in all honesty they really don’t know. Christmas is being celebrated earlier and earlier every year. Halloween was just a little over a week ago, and people already have Christmas decorations in and around their homes. I think people are forgetting a little holiday known as Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a holiday that is supposed to be celebrated near the end of November, but nobody really celebrates it anymore. Everyone in America is so caught up with getting Christmas gifts, they forget about the one holiday where we give thanks for what we have.

My family and I take a vacation every year around Thanksgiving. We leave Thanksgiving day and head to Foley, Alabama. There is a huge outlet mall, and this is where we shop for Christmas presents. However, we don’t start shopping until Black Friday. It is a must that my family and I sit down at Cracker Barrel and eat on Thanksgiving turkey dinner. It’s not the ideal Thanksgiving, but it is what we have done for quite a few years now.

Two weeks ago, I was coming home from school and someone that lives down the street from me had their Christmas decorations up. Let’s take note that this was, in fact, five days before Halloween. While I had a cute Halloween wreath on my door, this home had lights in their bushes and a Christmas tree in their window. I actually stopped my car and stared. I could not believe that they had skipped over two holidays to put up lights and a tree.

Like I already said, Christmas is one of my favorite holidays. So, watching Christmas movies and listening to Christmas music are some of my favorite things. They just aren’t my favorite things in the middle of Halloween when I am trying to watch “Hocus Pocus.”

Something else brought to my attention last year was Christmas music being played on the radio too early. When I was little, the day after Thanksgiving was the day that Christmas music started playing on the radio station 101.9. The past two years were a completely different scenario. The Christmas music started about four days before Thanksgiving. I still had yet to eat turkey and fight for the wishbone. Why was there Christmas music already on the radio?

People that skip over Halloween and Thanksgiving drive me crazy. I am a person who likes to live in the moment, but if it is the beginning of November and you are wishing for Christmas, you need to stop.  If a person is going to start celebrating Christmas in October, we might as well just celebrate Christmas year round. Just a reminder, Halloween is always October 31, Thanksgiving is always the last Thursday in November and Christmas is December 25. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.
