Every morning on my long walk past Friendship Circle to the art buildings, I would pass War Memorial Student Union Park. It made me happy to see a place where students could tie up their hammocks or talk with their friends under the trees. I myself have studied at the tables and have enjoyed my lunch in the small piney wood. When I found out the university was going to cut the trees down, my first thought was that I felt sorry for the hammock sleepers. I’m sure they are the most bummed out.
War Memorial Student Union Park had the perfect trees for taking a hammock nap and I never got to test it out. I will never know the sweet sensation of taking a hammock nap in War Memorial Student Union Park and neither will the rest of us who never had a chance to tie up their hammock.
Other than hammocks, the university does not have enough shade and quiet areas around the Student Union. There are more tables and benches being put up, as well as walkways being made. I am super excited about the walkways, no more muddy shoes. However, I wish that there were more places like the War Memorial Student Union Park. A quiet, shady place filled with tables and benches is all I ask.
We need more places, other than Friendship Circle and the greenery by Quizno’s, to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
The worst time of year is August and September when it is 100 degrees outside and we are all covered in sweat. It is nice to have shady places to sit down if we choose to stay outside. Most students hangout around the Student Union in the little shade provided, and I think people would come outside more if we had places that provided shade.
If you did not already know, the pine trees in War Memorial Student Union Park were leaning and I understand that they could possibly become hazardous to the surrounding buildings, but that is why they should plant more trees. Yes, I know that it takes a while for trees to grow, but there is always the option of gazebos. There was a gazebo my friend and I used to sit at every day by the art buildings, and they tore it down last semester. One can imagine how mad I was because I love gazebos. That is why putting gazebos in War Memorial Student Union Park sounds like a great idea to me, as well as around campus. If it takes too much time to replant trees and for them to grow, then other forms of shade need to be created.
