Productivity may continue even after classes end

In my personal opinion, one should approach summer without the mindset of “Oh, it’s summer. Time to not think for three months.” Now, this does not mean that it is not a time to de-stress from school. This time period is best used preparing. How many hours have students wasted because they did not think ahead to schedule out their week? There are things students can do over the summer to prevent stress during the school year. However, summer is also a time to relax.

People can prepare for the school year in little ways, taking a couple hours out of a week to focus their mind in an attempt to avoid the dullness that comes from not adding anything new to their schedule. This doesn’t need to be complicated or hard. For example, I made a Pinterest board to which I pinned different ways to take notes and write essays. This took me maybe five minutes during my browsing-for-fun time, but if I review these pins before and during the school year, it might help me advance. Another simple and obvious but understated way to prepare is to work during the summer. It can’t hurt to put in the time and effort of getting and maintaining a job. This has short-term effects, such as some savings or pocket change, and long-term effects, such as building characteristics those future employers look for. Personally, I think that it is never too soon to have one, two or however many jobs as necessary. Working menial jobs at the beginning of one’s college career will ensure that one is able to move past them by the time one has moved on from their college education. Also, having a job is beneficial because it keeps the mind active during the summer instead of letting it fall into a vegetative state.

Now, summer is also a time  for relaxing, traveling and doing whatever else there is not time for during the busy school weeks. Personally, I say take time off, go on a trip, explore and adventure. There is nothing wrong with taking time to do something because of a want rather than a need. I would advise pushing oneself in periods between relaxing If students want to start a business in their future, I’d advise working on it now no matter how new to the college life they are. I am an upcoming sophomore in Fall 2017. During my first year at the university, I was able to make connections. I was able to rely on my network when I decided to launch my business. So, find a way to do small things now to save time, energy and stress from the future days of busy school and work life. Also take time to relax and do something that isn’t possible to do during a hectic week of work. Balancing one’s life during the summer can lead to a more balanced school year.
