Robinson and Gatlin named DSA Man and Woman of the Year

After dozens of students were honored for their dedication and service to Southeastern, Hunter Robinson and Shawndreka Gatlin were named the 2013 Division of Student Affairs Man and Woman of the Year at the 33rd annual DSA Convocation.
The DSA Man and Woman of the Year Award is the highest student award presented at the convocation. The winners were announced through a video presentation that included photos and testimonies from faculty and staff.
“I really did cry when I saw the video,” said Gatlin, a senior fashion merchandising major. “I feel completely honored, and I’m very thankful for going to a school where I can show my appreciation, and it shows appreciation back; not just to me, but to all of the students that serve it. I want to give back to Southeastern just as much as it has given me.”
In addition to being named DSA Man of the Year, Robinson, a senior communication major, was also named Greek Man of the Year.
“I’m shocked because I know there are a lot of people that really are more deserving than me,” said Robinson. “But it is an honor to represent my school on this level.”
Rebecca Schnadelbach, president of Southeastern’s chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, was named Greek Woman of the Year.
The convocation was held on Wednesday, April 24 in the Twelve Oaks reception hall at 7 p.m., with Director of the War Memorial Student Union Jonathan Ambrose as the ceremony’s emcee. In addition to the presentation of awards, the ceremony also hosted the inauguration of the recently elected Student Government Association leaders. After being sworn in by current the Chief Justice, Kayla Turner, Chief Justice-elect Mary Takewell swore in Vice President-elect Jeff Simmons and then President-elect Gregory Crovetto. Following Crovetto’s inaugural speech, the handing out of awards began, beginning with the Green S award, this year given to 35 students. The other awards include Outstanding Freshman Male and Female, awarded to Chase Cole and Amy Purvis; Most Outstanding International Student, awarded to Pasang Sherpa; the Student Organizations Award of Excellence, awarded to campus chapters of the Alpha Omicron Pi and Delta Tau Delta fraternities and the appointment of 18 DSA leadership Ambassadors.
Following the ceremony was a brief reception where everyone said their goodbyes. However, this does not mark the end of their drive to excel and serve.
“I’m going to get a job, an internship; I have to stay on the grind,” said Gatlin. “My friends are all asking me what I’m going to do with all of my free time after I graduate, but I don’t see any free time in my future. I gotta stay busy, because that’s who I am.”
