Last week at Strawberry Stadium students got the opportunity to participate at Minute to Win It.
Homecoming week presents the opportunity for many students to have fun after midterms and for freshman to experience campus in a different way.
Minute to Win It is a competition that has been held every homecoming week for the past four years with the participants being members of student organizations. Student organizations teamed up with one another for the event. Participating organizations gained points from this event that accumulates until the Homecoming game, where they find out who will be crowned Homecoming week champions.
Student Director of Homecoming 2015 Regan Cascio explained how the teams were set up for this event.
“For this event we have nine teams compete,” said Cascio. “I wanna say it was between 15 and 20 organizations in those nine teams because a lot of the teams have more than one organization in them.”
The games that are played in Minute to Win It change every year and are carefully picked.
“For the games we just google them,” said Cascio. “Minute to Win It is a show on TV so a lot of people use their games for retreats and stuff like that. We just go through them and have a selection process and say, ‘no this game won’t work because we’re outside,’ so that is how we refine the list.”
The games played this year were Tipsy, Face the Cookie, Hanky Panky, Office Dominoes and Fish Hat. Each game has a wacky way to win and the participants only had 60 seconds to perform the task.
The game Tipsy is won by balancing soda cans on its beveled edges. In order to do this the participant cannot drink all of the soda inside so the participant has to figure how much soda they need to drink.
In the game Face the Cookie, the participants needed to get up to three cookies from their forehead to their mouth without using their hands.
In Hanky Panky, participants grabbed as many tissues out of the box as they could, but could only use one hand.
The object of the game Office Dominoes is to stand reams of copy paper in a domino style and have them fall perfectly on a bell.
The night came to an end with the game Fish Hat. While blindfolded, the participants had to lower a lamp shade on their head using a fishing rod.
“My favorite was the Oreo one,” said junior kinesiology major Gabrielle Theriot from team Phi Mu and Kappa Sigma. “Because it involved food even though I didn’t get to play it.”
After five rounds of games the competition ended in a tie for second place between the Catholic Student Association and the Phi Mu and Kappa Sigma team. To break the tie, the two teams played the game Tipsy again. It was a close finish, but CSA got the victory.
The final rankings for the competition is Kappa Alpha finished first, CSA finished second and Phi Mu and Kappa Sigma finished third.
Senior communication major Tyler Waggenspack enjoyed his first time attending Minute to Win It.
“It was really fun.” said Waggenspack. “I thought it was awesome. It’s my first time doing it even though I have been here for four years now. I thought it was really awesome to see everyone have competitive fun.”
Students can anticipate doing this event next year along with all the other fun activities that only happen on Homecoming week.
