The nation’s oldest and most prestigious interdisciplinary honor society, Phi Kappa Phi, will celebrate their 15th Intramural Quiz Bowl as a part of Homecoming week.
“We began this quiz bowl tournament 15 years ago when football returned to Southeastern, and it has been a regular event during Homecoming week since that time,” said Dr. Joan Faust, a professor of English and undergraduate coordinator for the English department and founder of Quiz Bowl. “We offer it as ‘another kind of competition’ during that week,” said Faust.
The tournament will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 2 p.m. to about 5:30 p.m., or when the last competition ends. It will take place in the old Student Union Theater.
Quiz Bowl will be a double elimination tournament with student teams going against each other at 2 p.m., followed by faculty beginning at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the faculty teams will go up against the winning student team. The winning faculty and student team will receive a $100 prize. The second place teams will receive a $50 prize.
“We can accept four student teams of three to five members each and four faculty teams,” said Faust. “These can represent organizations, departments or just a group of friends.”
Last year, the faculty took home the trophy. Mens Sana en Corpore Sano, which means Health in Mind and Body, is a team from the kinesiology department which won the championship.
“For doing so, each team member received a trophy and the team receives the championship trophy to keep until the next tournament,” said Faust.
Faust would like to see more student teams compete for the championship trophy and hopes students will join the fun.
“We could use a couple more student teams,” said Faust. “At this point, we have two teams consisting of honors students. In the past, fraternities and sororities have formed teams to compete. It is definitely not high-pressure, but lots of fun.”
