Students were rained out on Cook Field waiting for the Lip Sync competition to take place.
The Student Government Association postponed their annual Lip Sync due to inclement weather. The competition was supposed to take place right after the bonfire, but ended up getting pushed back two hours. The competition took place in the Student Union Breezeway on Oct. 20 at 10 p.m.
The Lip Sync competition is a way for students and organizations to come together and show their school pride through a night of multiple events. The competition challenged organizations to come up with a routine based on the Homecoming theme, Roomie’s Road Trip. Each organization had a different theme and a different way of approaching the challenge. Due to this past year’s weather, SGA monitored the weather carefully.
“We always monitor the weather, and hopefully we can move the competition inside if it starts to rain, safety is our main concern,” said Erin Fernandez, SGA President.
Upon waiting on the competition to start, there was a change in the weather. It went from clear skies to cold and rainy with flashes of lightning. Students gathered in the Pennington Center for the announcement of whether the competition would be canceled or not.
“The weather is an inconvenience, but nothing is going to rain on our parade,” said Rachael Johnson, a junior biology major.
SGA and the Office for Student Engagement decided that the show must go on.
“Office for Student Engagement and SGA had to come together, we thought really quickly, we brainstormed and then decided to have it at the S,” said Fernandez.
Some of the students were satisfied with this decision of just postponing the event instead of rescheduling for a later date.
“Compared to Greek Week last semester, I’m glad that Southeastern decided to look in the student’s best interest,” said Kappa Sigma President Alec Jones. “It’s nice to see each organization come together even if the event was postponed two hours later.”
Unlike Jones, others hoped that it would have been postponed to a later date for technical purposes, or moved to a bigger spot than the Student Union Breezeway.
“I think they could have found a bigger place,” said Jordan Hartman, a junior general studies major. “I also think they should have waited another night for seating purposes.”
Despite the weather and the change of location, there was a great number of people in the crowd. The audience enjoyed the performance and anticipate those to come.
“Students are already looking forward to next year’s competition,” said sophomore Richard Davis Jr., a middle school education major. “I think everyone was high spirited. I had a lot of fun. Looking forward to next year’s competition.”
At the end of the night, the winners were announced. Alpha Omicron Pi and Delta Tau Delta took the first place win with the Chicago stop on Roomie’s Road Trip.
“A lot of hard work went into it,” said Landon Brown, a senior and member of Delta Tau Delta. “We started three weeks before and we want to give a lot of credit to the Alpha Omicron Pi girls. The location change did not affect our team, but a lot of people liked this location better.”
