The university has recently made resources available designed to help veteran students.
On Thursday, Nov. 10 at 2 p.m., the first annual Veteran Student Orientation was held in the Student Union Ballroom A. Assistant Director of Office of Admissions, Chenoa Worthington, was in charge of the orientation.
“It was originally scheduled at the beginning of the semester,” said Worthington. “It had to be rescheduled due to the flood.”
The orientation was specifically held for veteran students. The purpose of it was to inform veterans about benefits, programs and other services the university has to offer them.
“Different areas will speak to them,” said Worthington. “It’s in coordination with Veteran’s Day. It’s an orientation and an appreciation reception combined in one.”
The orientation first started off with a welcome, then different speakers spoke on behalf of the offices they work with. Office of Veteran Services, Center for Student Excellence, Office of Disability Services, Career Services, University Counseling Center and Veterans Upward Bound all spoke about a variety of information and services that veterans can use. They encouraged veterans to take advantage of the services offered to them. As people sat down, a program, pages for notes, an informational page, a university pen and a thank you card was set up on each table for the veterans to have.
The event was approximately an hour long and it ended with a reception and information browse. Tables were set up in the back of the ballroom with information booths regarding the different topics discussed. During and after the event, the veterans were thanked for their service.
