Students competed at Strawberry Stadium in “Minute to Win It,” with Delta Tau Delta and Sigma Sigma Sigma ultimately coming out on top in what was their first win of the week. The event started at 7:30 p.m., but students filled the stadium early to mingle and listen to music.
There were eleven teams total, and they were a mix of Greek life, along with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Campus Activities Board, the Black Student Union, the Catholic Student Association and the Baptist Collegiate Ministry. Players were awarded extra points for dressing up in this week’s theme “Once Upon a Homecoming.” Among attendance were the seven dwarves, Aladdin, Peter Pan and Ariel.
The teams competed in ten timed events that lasted a minute each. One of the events, called Nervous Nelly, involved the competitors being outfitted with a pedometer on each limb, and trying to accumulate more steps than their opponents. One competitor decided the most effective way to do this would be to drop to the ground and flail about.
Another game involved attaching tissue boxes filled with Ping-Pong balls to the player’s butts. The goal was to empty the box as quickly as possible without the players using their hands.
“I did not win, but I really do think that I looked the best doing it,” said Delta Tau Delta member Matthew Matherne.
There was an issue with some of the boxes not being open wide enough, however, and so the Student Government Association arranged a special bonus round to make up for this. The bonus round was the classic “Minute to Win It” game that involves the competitor moving an Oreo from their forehead to their mouth without the use of their hands.
“I’ve actually been playing these games for five or six years,” said Matherne. “So, I was giving advice everywhere.”
The two Greek organizations were excited to bring back their first win for homecoming, but it wasn’t their only focus. They also enjoyed just representing their groups.
“It feels great to come out here and support our chapters,” said Delta Tau Delta member Marc Gremillion.
There are still more events to come though, and the members agreed that the event on everyone’s mind now is the “Lip Sync Competition.”
“The lip sync team has been practicing like five days a week,” said Sigma Sigma Sigma member Krystal Waddell. “I think we’ll place.”
