“Winter Welcome” continued with a line stretching along one side of the third floor of the War Memorial Student Union as students waited to get into the university’s first “Silent Disco.”
The event was held in the Student Union Ballroom at 7 p.m. on Jan. 25.
Senior communication major Danita Winfrey worked the event with the Student Government Association and shared her thoughts on the event.
“I think this is a great event,” said Winfrey. “This is the first time that Southeastern has done this, and I think we have a really great turnout. I love that we have a very diverse amount of students in here, a diverse amount of music going on, and overall, I think it’s really a success and people are really enjoying themselves.”
At the “Silent Disco,” attendees wore wireless headphones to listen to the music instead of a speaker system.
Sophomore communication sciences and disorders major Kayla Monlyn discussed why she attended the event.
“I decided to come because it was Thursday,” said Monlyn. “I’ve been working hard all week. It’s been stressful ‘cause teachers were trying to make up for lost time, and I decided to take a break from school work.”
Junior kinesiology major Tristan Ellis, who worked the event for his fraternity, shared his thoughts on the event’s attendance.
“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting it, but I’m glad it turned out like it did,” said Ellis. “Like I said, it’s a real successful big hit, and I’d like to see this event happen again in the future for the campus.”
Monlyn, however, was not surprised by the turnout.
“It’s something different on campus,” said Monlyn. “Nobody ever did it before, so people are expecting different things.”
Coordinator for Multicultural and International Student Affairs Marjorie Parker shared the reason for holding a “Silent Disco.”
“Some of the students were like, ‘Oh, we’d love a silent disco,’” said Parker. “So, I brought it to my director, and we decided, ‘Let’s do it.’ That’s how it happened. Students wanted it. We made it happen for them.”
Winfrey hopes to see the event return after its successful reception.
“I just hope that we make this an every year thing because this is really cool, and I think everybody really likes it so far,” said Winfrey. “Hopefully we just get bigger and better.”
