The Campus Activities Board (CAB) in partnership with The Office of Student Conduct, Fresh Peeps and University Housing collaborated to join students for an alcohol-free night of food, music and dancing on Wednesday, April 10.
alcohol-free Club Night welcomed students to enjoy the company of their peers while learning about the dangers of drinking and driving and the impact that alcohol has on the body in a vibrant environment.
“It was a collaborative effort to get some awareness out there, but try to do it in a non-traditional way,” said Todd McElroy, CAB director. “It seemed to be a good turn-out.”
Students were served Raising Cane’s chicken fingers, lemonade and alcohol-free beverages. Participants also had the option to sign a pledge to drink responsibly.
CJ Davis, freshman computer science major enjoyed his experience and expressed excitement in the music and information presented.
“I really love to dance, and I wanted to learn more about alcohol,” said Davis. “If they had more people it would be really awesome. This event really helped. It was awesome, and I love to dance.”
The program sought to advocate safety while under the influence and allow students to experience fun without alcohol.
“It started with the office of student conduct and kind of grew,” said Ashanti McLaurin, senior education major and member of CAB. “The main goal was just to talk about alcohol awareness, and say you can have fun without having alcohol in your system or you can have fun but be safe at the same time. We did want a bigger turnout, and we got it.”
The party was developed in three weeks and was able to attract more than 350 students.
“We had about 350 come through,” said McElroy. “Some people came in saw what was going on, hung out for a little bit and moved on, but it was a good turn out.”
Although the program garnered success, the program will not take place again this semester; however, CAB plans to host the party again in the future.
“We see some things that we need to change for next time, but I think this is definitely an event that we will bring back,” added McLaurin. “It’s beneficial to our campus, to our college.”
