‘Trick-or-Treat on Greek Street’ joins fall carnival

The Office of Greek Life, the Black Student Union (BSU) and the Office of Multicultural & International Student Affairs (MISA) are joining together this Halloween to provide a safe environment for kids on Halloween night by combining the “Trick-or-Treat on Greek Street” with the 6th annual Fall Carnival.

The event will be held Sunday, Oct. 31st, from 5-7 p.m., in the Greek Village and is free for anyone who wishes to participate. The Greek Village is located at 1500 North General Pershing on Southeastern’s north campus.

The Greeks will be sponsoring a traditional trick-or-treat style event. The participating children will go from house-to-house within Greek Village and collect candy from the sororities and fraternities. The purpose of the event is to offer a safer environment for kids to enjoy, rather than them knocking on strangers’ doors on Halloween night.

When the kids have gotten their fill of trick-or-treating and candy, they will be offered to play and participate in traditional carnival games as part of the Fall Carnival, put on every year for the past six years by MISA and the BSU. This year the carnival will be held in the middle of the Greek Village in order to allow the kids to participate in both events.

“This year we have two fun events in one great location,” said Director of Greek Life Cherie’ Kay Thriffiley in an October 20 Public Info press release. “Offering both events simultaneously allows kids to trick or treat at each Greek house and an opportunity to participate in carnival-style games for prizes.”

The carnival will have basic carnival-style games. There will be face painting, balloons and games such as musical chairs. The Southeastern fire truck will also be featured to allow kids a chance to mess and tinker with all the gadgets inside. MISA has also ordered two space walks for the night. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Organizations that do not have a house in the Greek Village will be running and assisting the children in the carnival games.

“This is an opportunity to provide kids to have more candy and games, while in a safe environment,” said Eric Summers, director of MISA. “We want to bring people to Southeastern for a day of fun. The kids will not have to go door-to-door to get their candy.”

Parking for the event will be available in the University Center lot south of the entrance to Greek Village. Kids of all ages are invited to this Halloween night event.
