Alpha Week welcomed students to entertain, fellowship and give back to the Southeastern community, in addition to the unleashing of the newest brothers of the fraternity during their annual probate.
“Alpha Week is a week that the Kappa Nu chapter puts on several events just to give back to our student body,” said Keonte‘ Herrera, vice president. “We have Alpha Week every year in the spring semester. The events vary from year to year, but we always do Women’s appreciation, and the crawfish boil.”
The fraternity welcomed students to Greek Village to enjoy music, crawfish and a live show unveiling their new line of brothers including George Veals, Greg Jackson, Eric Ingram and Orlando George.
Although the brothers continued activities from previous years, such as a program titled RePhlections that debuted in 2012, new events were introduced. The Greek Grammys 2013 was an awards program, which awarded students from Greek organizations for various talents and abilities.
“All of our events this year had great turnouts and the students really enjoyed all of the events, especially the new addition of the Greek Grammys,” said Herrera.
Members of the fraternity ended the week spending time with the elderly at the Landmark Nursing Home, participating in community service and playing bingo.
As the semester comes to a close the brothers will be focusing on maintaining good grades.
“As far as the rest of the semester we are really focusing on our grades,” said Herrera. “We have been the top fraternity in our council when it comes to grades for the last four to five semesters and would love to continue that streak.”
The fraternity will plan for next semester during the summer at their planning retreat, but are looking forward to participating in summer orientations, homecoming and the annual Greek Show.
“We do not know exactly what we have coming up for the fall just because we have our planning retreat in the summer,” said Herrera. “Homecoming is always one big event in the fall as well as our annual Greek Show that is held in the University Center. We will be helping out this summer at the orientations broadcasting our organization and the things we do and informing interested students the steps to potentially become an Alpha man. We really love our student body and appreciate all the support we get, and we make that known to them as well as the community of Hammond.”
