The Student Government Association (SGA) is giving students a Lion Pride T-shirt for every old t-shirt from another university, high school or three canned goods.
The goal of the canned food drive is to promote school spirit as well as community service. It began when school started and will continue until SGA runs out of shirts. The food will be donated to the Tangi Food Pantry.
“SGA is doing this to make the students realize how important community service is,” said William Takewell, SGA chief justice. “It will also help us realize that we are being responsible and not just giving things away to anyone and everyone.”
SGA has already received over 200 canned goods and about 50 t-shirts. They are hoping to raise over 500 cans of food. The cans will be donated all at once to the pantry, and the t-shirts will be donated to either Goodwill or St. Vincent de Paul.
The SGA has advertised the drive through students picking up scantrons and coffee in the SGA office and word of mouth. SGA will also be promoting the drive in the Student Union during Gumbo Ya-Ya.
“The reason we’re trying to promote more Southeastern school spirit is because we’ve had such a problem with students wearing LSU shirts and other school paraphernalia,” said Jacy Carpenter, SGA associate chief justice.
This is the second time that SGA has held a canned food drive, the first being last year.
“We decided to do this last year as a community service project on behalf of all Southeastern students,” said Takewell.
“In partnership with the Athletics department, Luke Holloway, SGA president, and the rest of the athletic fee board, SGA executive board and department heads came up with an idea to promote more school spirit on campus as well as donating to our community,” said Carpenter. “This is definitely a way to kill two birds with one stone.”
