In a campus notice, the University Police Department revealed that a student reported an attempt to steal his motorcycle in the D Vickers Hall parking lot.
The incident occurred on Sept. 10, 2013.
According to the report, the student had started the motorcycle and was about to leave campus when the subject struck him in the forehead with a fist. The student called for help, and the subject fled on foot. An officer heard the student call for help and caught the fleeing subject off-campus near Oak Alley Apartments. The subject was arrested and charged with attempted carjacking, simple battery, resisting an officer and providing false identification.
“He was on the bike, ready to leave campus, when the assailant came from behind him and struck him,” said UPD Lieutenant Patrick Gipson. “After we caught him and took a closer look we found that the person we arrested had an extended [criminal] history.”
No weapons were used in the incident, and the student has suffered only a minor injury when the subject struck him.
Gipson said that of all types of campus crime, theft is by far the most common, from snatching electronics to stealing motor vehicles. While something as simple as keeping track of your things may help prevent theft, Gipson said there are no guarantees when it comes to crime.
“More than anything else, thefts are the most common; they are crimes of opportunity,” he said. “There is no single ‘do this’ to avoid being victimized. The person responsible for the crime is the criminal, not the victim. “
The report from the UPD asked that students and employees remain aware of their surroundings and immediately report any suspicious or criminal activity to the UPD at 985-549-2222, a 24-hour emergency phone line.
