This year’s Mocktails was given a new location in the parking garage next to Strawberry Stadium on Oct.13
Mocktails is a non-alcoholic party held in order for so different organizations, such as Peer Educators Educating Peers (PEEPS), to help bring alcohol awareness to Southeastern’s campus.
The purpose of this event is to promote a designated driver program throughout all student organizations and increase awareness of the dangers of drinking and driving and underage drinking.
The theme for Mocktails this year was “All Around the World.”
Mocktails began when the guest speaker Michael Gershe talked to students about the “Magic of Life” in the Student Union Theatre at 7 p.m.
The “Magic of Life” was a personal story on how alcohol affected him throughout his life. He also gave students information on possibilities of what can happen if you drink too much.
“Over 1,600 college students die of alcohol poisoning a year,” said Gershe. “But now your friend is dead and you have to look their parents in the eyes and tell them that you were there.”
Right after Gershe finished his speech the students and organizations walked to Strawberry Stadium to continue Mocktails.
All of the organizations on Southeastern’s campus that wanted to participate were able to set up booths with the design of their choice.
Not only did booths have non-alcoholic drinks for attendees to sample, but booths such as the Binge Drinking booth required those who wanted a drink to take a quiz on the facts and myths of drinking.
Mocktails also added a new event called the “Dance Your Butts Off” competition.
In “Dance Your Butts Off,” all of the participants danced around to see how many cigarette butts they could get to fall from a Kleenex box attached to their backs.
The winners of all the different categories this year were announced at the Foam Party after the event.
The top honors of the drinks portion belonged to the NAACP’s Brazilian themed “Jugo de Carnival” mocktail.
The winner of the booth portion of the contest this year was the combined team of Phi Mu and Theta Xi.
