Southeastern plays home to many abandoned and lost bicycles throughout each year. They are currently being tagged by the University Police Department (UPD).
All bikes that are left on campus will be removed according to the rules that govern abandoned property.
A bicycle is considered to be abandoned if there are no seats, no pedals or no tires.
The UPD does a check around campus at the end of every semester to determine what bike is lost or abandoned.
All bikes that are still on Southeastern’s campus are scheduled to go through the process of being removed from campus sometime after graduation.
Any bicycle that is not secured properly to a bike rack in the Greek Village or Southeastern Oaks will be removed at the end of the semester.
The bikes that are scheduled to be removed at the end of the semester can be easily distinguished by the UPD because of the tags that are being placed on them.
“We put the tags on the bikes so that students can know what is getting ready to be done to their bikes,” said UPD officer Mike Prescott. “Sadly, we cannot give the bikes to any other students unless they are the owner of the bikes.”
After the bikes are tagged, students will have two weeks to get their bikes off campus which will be followed by a 30 day period where they can pick up their bikes, and if it is not done then they will be turned over to Property Control of Louisiana.
Any student who knows the owners of any of the bikes should do their best to notify them of what is happening before it is too late to do anything about it.
For more information on how the removal of abandoned bicycles from campus works, the UPD can be contacted at 985-549-2222.
