The campus community was alerted to an unfolding situation yesterday evening when reports of gunfire prompted a swift and heavy response from University and Hammond Police Departments.
At approximately 6 p.m., Hammond Fire and Rescue along with multiple units from the HPD and SLUPD converged on North Oak Park, which is located north of campus. The entire park complex was sealed off and evacuated as the first responders attended to the active crime scene.
University officials quickly alerted the campus utilizing the Emergency Alert System. The incident reportedly stemmed from an altercation between two non-students. Law enforcement officials report that one non-student was taken into custody while another was removed to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for a gunshot wound. No threat to students or the campus was indicated.
