New students to learn campus ‘Traditions’

More often than not, incoming students may be unfamiliar with the goings-on of their new college campus. Southeastern offers a remedy for this dive into uncharted territory with “Traditions.” Put together by the Office of Student Development, “Traditions” is a series of events meant to inform new and returning students about the campus and to help make them more comfortable. The myriad of activities encourages participants to make new friends, take part in campus life and cultivate pride for their university.

“We’re just trying to acclimate them to the college environment and try to get them involved in the campus and know the different departments,” said Pradish Jung Shahi, a sophomore student worker for the War Memorial Student Union.

“Traditions” will take place on Aug. 14-17 and will feature informative and social activities, games and more, to help introduce students to campus life. Some of the biggest events of this program are Move-in Mane-ia, LIVE @ the Oak with Southeastern’s campus organizations and Strawberry Jam.

Move-in Mane-ia will take place on Sunday, Aug. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students that will be living on campus are to meet at the Pennington Student Activity Center at their previously designated move-in time. From there, Residential Assistants (RAs) will lead students to their dorms and give them instructions for moving into their rooms.

LIVE @ the Oak with Southeastern’s Organizations will take place on Monday, Aug. 15 and will begin at 7 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Campus Activities Board (CAB) and will take place in Friendship Circle. Live music and free food are included parts of this nighttime activity.

Sponsored by the Student Government Association, the Picnic with the President will be on Tuesday, Aug. 16 from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. This luncheon will be given in the Twelve Oaks reception center. Students are welcome to eat lunch with President John L. Crain and meet with their Center for Student Excellence Academic Advisors.

The big attraction of “Traditions” is called Strawberry Jam. The official kickoff party, this event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16. Everyone is welcome to meet at the Strawberry Stadium Parking Garage for live music, free pizza, T-shirts, giveaways and mingling. Sponsored by the Division for Student Affairs, Strawberry Jam is a celebration to get ready for the upcoming academic semester.

The final piece of “Traditions” takes place on the first day of classes, Wednesday, Aug. 17. At 8 a.m., a “Traditions” tent will be set up in the Student Union Mall where students can get answers for all of their campus questions.
