The Lions Legacy Association gave students the opportunity to show appreciation to more than 900 alumni who contribute to the university through Thank-A-Thon.
As an extension of the Philanthropy Week celebration, Lions Legacy were set up in the Student Union between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15 for students to dedicate expressions of thanks to deserving donors. Students who participated were given a pair of Lions Legacy sunglasses and were also eligible for entry into a drawing for a gift card to local restaurants including Voo Doo Barbeque and Eddie’s Frozen Custard.
Director of Annual Giving, Jacki Bellairs explained that students on campus often do not know the amount of financial resources that alumni contribute to the university through scholarships and buildings. With the number of significant budget cuts faced by higher education, donations keep the university going.
“One of our main goals is to educate students on philanthropy,” said Bellairs.
Several students realized that the donations of donors affect them individually and felt that the notes were a special way to show personal impact of their gifts.
“It’s a personal touch, and it keeps money coming in for small things that the government doesn’t pay for, doesn’t allow for and people are able to give back to the community,” said Cal Broussard, a junior studying criminal justice. “It makes them feel good to know that they contributed to a specific person instead of just a blank university.”
Several students stopped by to show their gratitude and respect while passing through the union and acknowledged that there isn’t enough appreciation shown to donors. The opportunity presented by Thank-A-Thon highlights the importance of thanks and showing gratitude.
“Usually people don’t expect thanks, but most people don’t ever get a chance to receive thanks,” said Danny Clark, senior business management major. “I’m a military veteran so I know how important it is and what a good feeling it is when people tell you ‘Thank you’ for your contributions.”
With goals to educate students on the importance of philanthropy, raising funds and unifying the student body, the mission of the Lions Legacy Association is to promote a spirit of philanthropy and contributions of time, talent, and treasure among students that extend beyond graduation.
All proceeds of events hosted by Lions Legacy are used for scholarships, campus improvements, technology and student recruitment.
