Students will have an opportunity to develop their leadership skills at the upcoming Southeastern Leadership Conference featuring guest speaker Chad Crittenden.
The conference will be held from 8 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on March 3 in the Student Union for anyone who would like to attend.
According to Cherie Thriffiley, director of the Office for Student Engagement, the registration fee is $25 for Southeastern students and $45 for non-Southeastern students
“This is an awesome opportunity for Southeastern students to experience a conference with other leaders from universities and colleges in the region,” said Thriffiley. “It is a reasonable price, and it will be a day full of leadership development and fun.”
This will be the seventh annual Southeastern Leadership Conference hosted by Southeastern Louisiana University.
According to one of last year’s attendants the 2011 leadership conference was a successful and inspiring event.
“I liked last year’s conference because it gave me an opportunity to get closer to the other student leaders I came to the conference with and to meet new ones,” said Claire Salinas, sophomore communications major. “I also got to go to a session put on by older Southeastern students, so it was nice to hear some of their advice!”
The theme of this year’s leadership conference is “Ready, set, lead!” in honor of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
The conference will consist of a morning session with the keynote speaker and three group sessions with four presentations offered at each time, allowing students to choose which presentation they would like to attend. Participants will be provided with breakfast and lunch.
“The Southeastern Leadership Conference offers a day of interactive and engaging sessions on issues facing student leaders,” said Thriffiley. “Students will be able to network with other student leaders and gain knowledge about their own leadership potential.”
The featured keynote speaker, Crittenden, is noted as being a Survivor contestant, an Olympic medalist as well as a motivational speaker.
After losing his right foot to cancer in 2002, Crittenden recovered and continued on to compete in Survivor in 2004. After competing in Survivor, Crittenden went on to compete in the Olympics from 2005-2008.
“I’m excited about this year because the committee is doing everything in our power to make this the most student friendly experience,” said Salinas. “This is an awesome conference right here on campus that every student who is involved or wants to be involved should take advantage of.”
