Students enjoyed throwing dodgeballs at each other as they competed in Phi Mu’s Dodgeball Tournament held this past Sunday in the Pennington Activity Center.
The tournament is held annually by the Phi Mu Sorority as a fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network. The event was open to all students with a registration fee of $15, which covered a T-shirt, pizza, drinks and the opportunity to play dodgeball.
“Phi Mu wanted an event that was fun for not only us, but also other students and community members,” said junior Brooke Self, philanthropy chairmen of Phi Mu Sorority. “Sporting events are always fun and competitive and we chose dodgeball because it was an easy setup with simple rules to follow.”
This year marked the sixth year for Phi Mu’s Dodgeball Tournament. About $8000 was raised for the Children’s Miracle Network by the tournament.
“I thought this was a wonderful event because we raised money for Children’s Miracle Network and we get to have fun and play dodgeball,” said sophomore political science major Brittany Perise. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers all year and we raise a whole lot of money.”
The money raised came from donations made by local businesses, who donated $100, or more, to have their name on the back of the tournament T-shirts.
Among the list of generous patrons were: Cate Street Seafood Station, VooDoo BBQ and Grill, Master Chef Restaurant, Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, Outdoor Outfitters, Ferrara Electric and Bedico Tire Express.
“I thought the event was really well run,” said junior Vincent Rollo, majoring in business management. “The Phi Mu Sorority did a real good job. Everything was on time and up-beat.”
The teams were organized by members of Phi Mu, with a total of 37 teams, each consisting of six or seven players.
This year the team “Skeeza Pleezas” won the competition, winning a trophy, a Raising Cane’s party pack and bragging rights as the dodgeball champions of 2011.
On the winning team were: Brandon Faust, Blaine Dodgen, Vincent Rollo, Philip Sutton, Julia Lemus, Heather Rolfsen and Mark Ranatza.
“Me and my team showed great excellence at teamwork,” said Faust. “I want to send a special thank you to the Phi Mu ladies who hosted this excellent event.”
