Campus was closed on Feb 3-4 due to concerns of icy roads and inclement weather.
“It [the closure] was done mainly out of a concern for commuting students,” said Director of Public Information Rene Abadie. “Weather wasn’t very bad on campus, but to the west of us the roads began to ice over. The administration took a cautious approach.”
The weather had improved by Friday, but was still severe enough to affect the travel of the Sam Houston State women’s basketball team resulting in a delay of the game against the Lady Lions scheduled for 3 p.m. the next day.
“The game had to be pushed back because of the weather in Texas,” said Matt Sullivan, assistant director of athletics and media relations. “The buses were unable to leave from Sam Houston State until that Saturday morning.”
Despite the delay of the game the Alumni Day ceremony, featuring the jersey retirement of Robin Roberts, was carried out as planned.
The closure also resulted in the cancellation or postponement of several other events on campus such as the Black History Month kickoff. More information regarding the kickoff can be found in the article which is entitled ‘Love’s speech rescheduled for Thursday.’
