The Black Student Union (BSU) and the Office of Multicultural and International Student Affairs (MISA) will be having their Fall Carnival simultaneously with the Office for Student Engagement’s Trick or Treat on Greek Street on Monday, Oct. 31.
“It’s geared towards students’ children and faculty’s children,” said Beth Richardson, the assistant director of Student Engagement. “All of the Greek community pairs up in Greek Village and meets in the Greek courtyard, and the university children come and trick or treat.”
At the Fall Carnival and Trick or Treat on Greek Street, members of these organizations will dress up in costume, hand out candy and assist children with the games and activities being offered.
“We are planning to have many activities and games for children to play,” said Braylen Hamilton, the BSU president. “There will also be spacewalks, pizza and plenty of candy for children.”
Although these events are for children, all students and organizations are encouraged to lend a hand as well.
“The entire Hammond community is welcome,” said Hamilton. “Southeastern students can get involved by inviting family and friends with children. Also, student organizations are invited to provide a game or activity for children to participate in at this event, which must be done through the Office of MISA.”
The Fall Carnival and Trick or Treat on Greek Street are both annual events held to give families in the Southeastern community something safe and fun to do on Halloween.
According to Richardson, these events are a way for the Office for Student Engagement, the BSU and the Office of MISA to partner up and give back to the Hammond community. Greek Life, a part of the Office for Student Engagement, also plays a big part in this event in addition to the BSU and the Office of MISA.
“Having the entire Greek community come together for Trick or Treat on Greek Street was a great way to get to meet people in other sororities and fraternities,” said Hayley Arceneaux, a sophomore biology major and Alpha Sigma Tau sorority member, who participated in the event last year. “We all had partners and kids came by and we handed out candy. The kids were all so excited, and it felt great to give back to the community together.”
Branden Summers, a sophomore business major and Delta Tau Delta fraternity member, said that giving back to others is vastly important to Greek life at Southeastern.
“It warms our hearts to see the young ones of the local community come and trick or treat in a safe and loving atmosphere where we get to experience first hand their Halloween,” said Summers.
Both the Fall Carnival and Trick or Treat on Greek Street are free to the general public and will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Halloween night in Greek Village on North Campus.
