Mocktails 2011, themed “All Around the World,” saw Alpha Sigma Tau sorority and Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity come out on top. This year the event had a change in location to the parking garage and the addition of the “Dance Your Butt Off” competition, sponsored by PEEPS and Fresh PEEPS.
“Winning just shows how much our hard work paid off,” said Natalie Campsen, a senior psychology major. “We very much enjoy being able to work together with other organizations for a great cause and seeing what our teamwork can accomplish. Whether we win or not, competing is always a rewarding experience.”
Mocktails is an annual event that seeks to educate students on the dangers of underage drinking and driving.
This year, Mocktails began in the Student Union Theatre at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 13 with guest speaker Michael Gersch’s presentation “The Magic of Life,” a personal story on how alcohol affected him throughout his life.
After Gersch’s speech, students and organizations moved to the parking garage near Strawberry Stadium to set up their booths and mix their mocktails, which were inspired by nations around the world. After the booths were set up, judging for the best booth and best drink began. Alpha Sigma Tau and Tau Kappa Epsilon were named as the overall winner of the event with their Mexico themed booth and their non-alcoholic take on the classic margarita, taking first place in the drink competition and second place for their booth.
The winners of the booth competition were Phi Mu and Theta Xi in first place with a Caribbean theme. Third place was tied between Theta Chi and Alpha Omicron Pi, with their Italian themed booth, and the Southeastern chapter of the NAACP who had a Brazilian theme.
Second place in the drink competition went to Phi Mu and Theta Xi for their “Jolly Roger” mocktail and third place went to Black Student Union and From Start to Finish with their “Conniption” mocktail.
In the Dance Your Butts Off contest, participants danced around to see how many cigarette butts they could get to fall out of a Kleenex box attached to their backs. Callie Crain, a senior and member of Alpha Omicron Pi, was announced the winner of the competition.
