The Student Government Association provides an opportunity for students to give their input on changing policies and procedures that will affect the university, and campus life.
Although the executive board was chosen by default, with all candidates running unopposed, the next phase of SGA elections will take place April 7-9. Representatives will be elected and students will be allowed to vote on current orders of business including the proposed fee increase.
“We are going to need as much student input as possible,” said SGA President Gregory Crovetto. “Not only will students vote on student representatives for student government, but you will also vote on a student fee increase.”
The proposed fee is an increase of $58.50 for self-assessed fees. Although most of the funds will benefit Lion Athletics, $8.50 will be used to aid in the costs of student programs. Programs that will receive funding include cheerleaders, theatre, art gallery, Lionettes, varsity band, opera, concert choir and the Lion Traxx.
Crovetto believes the increase is necessary and will contribute to long term athletic success for the university.
“As a college student, it is already a challenge to pay college expenses; however, I assure you that this fee is a necessary investment,” he said. “Because of recent budget cuts, the athletic department was the first area to receive cuts. With ever-rising costs of school and the lowering of funds from the state, athletics are in dire need of financial assistance. We are now at the beginning of being one of the most dominant schools within our division, and this fee would ensure investment in our school for many years to come. I believe this will have a lasting effect on our entire athletic program.”
Any questions or concerns can be directed to Crovetto at gregory.crovetto@selu.edu.
“Ultimately this fee is in the hands of the students,” said Crovetto. ” We want your input. Lion Up.”
