Campus Activities Board (CAB) held the first Trip on the Traxx last month, in which students were able to take Lion Traxx buses to Baton Rouge and go ice skating for free at Leo’s Iceland.
Approximately forty students, and a few CAB workers, met at the Student Union at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, and each student was given their five dollar deposit back as they boarded onto the Lion Traxx buses.
Once the buses arrived at the rink, the students eagerly lined up to get their skates. After taking their time to put them on, everyone made their way out onto the ice.
Many of the students were first-time skaters, but a few experienced skaters were there to help the first timers get used to the ice.
“I have a new respect for fancy ice skaters,” said Megan Jenkins, a freshman early childhood education major.
Several students enjoyed different aspects of the trip. Farina Manandhar, a nursing sophomore, had an unusual but interesting favorite aspect of the trip.
“Falling on the ice,” said Manandhar. “Because we don’t have snow in our country.”
Along with the highlights of the Trip on the Traxx were some scary occurrences as well. Several students received injuries on the ice, the most serious being a broken leg. As a consequence, the only suggestions that students had for future ice-skating trips were kneepads, helmets and even a tutorial for new skaters.
Despite the injuries, the student attendants enjoyed the ice skating trip. Students were provided an air-conditioned bus ride to and from Baton Rouge, entrance into Leo’s Iceland, drinks and Domino’s pizza.
When asked if he would want to see the event happen again senior history major Devan Hariford said, “Absolutely, multiple times a year, if possible.”
The CAB Coordinator Todd Mcelroy said that CAB has many different trips in store for the future.
“We try to mix it up and do different things,” said McElroy. “We’re in the planning stages of several trips. We are looking at going bowling next semester, but nothing is official yet.”
