    Homecoming 2013 begins

Homecoming Week 2013 has begun in earnest, filling up the calendars of the campus community with plenty of parties and events until the Lions football team’s showdown with Lamar on Saturday.

On Monday, Oct. 21, students were able to Lunch with the Lions in the Student Union Park from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., where they enjoyed food, drinks and giveaways while dining with the football team.  Monday was also Green and Gold Day where the Student Government Association encourages students to wear their favorite green and gold attire.
Submissions for the Sheet Sign Competition were due to the Student Government Association office by Oct. 21, and judging began on Monday. Judging for the Downtown Window Decoration contest also began that day. The winners artwork will be photographed and displayed on the jumbo-tron by the University Center.

Today, Oct. 22, teams will compete in outdoor games at Strawberry Stadium at 7 p.m. in Minute to Win It. Based off of the NBC television show, also titled “Minute to Win It,” one member from each participating organization was chosen to compete. The contests themselves were organized through a predetermined bracket system.
The Campus Activities Board will host the annual Gumbo Ya-Ya celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Park on Wednesday. In addition to free gumbo and giant inflatable hamster balls, the 2013 Homecoming Court will also be presented to the student body officially for the first time.

This year, Up Til’ Dawn will be hosting a new event called Roomie’s Race for St. Jude. It is a game that will benefit St. Jude Hospital and is based off the television show “Amazing Race.”

On Thursday, SGA will host a block party/bonfire and will provide food, music and a pep rally  with a Lip Sync Competition at 6:45 p.m. on North Campus at the University Center field.
Saturday is Homecoming Day. SGA will organize their annual Homecoming Parade, which will begin at 3 p.m. After the parade, alumni and visitors will gather at Friendship Circle to enjoy tailgating, bands and booths before the game.

The presentation of the 2013 Homecoming Court occurs during halftime of the game. During this time, the 2013 Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned.
