The Southeastern Leadership Conference (SLC) Committee is searching for faculty, graduate students and community members to present breakout sessions on the topic of leadership for the 2012 Conference in March.
The SLC Committee is asking for leaders to apply by Feb. 17 for a 50-minute time slot to discuss aspects of leadership such as time management, conflict resolution, social media, etc. with students from colleges all over the southeast region of the U.S. The Conference is scheduled for March 3 and will be held in the Student Union. Southeastern students will be able to attend for $25; students from other colleges can register for an “early bird” rate of $35. The early bird deadline is Feb. 17.
“I think that for Southeastern students, for $25, the ability to network at a leadership conference with other students from here and other colleges around the southeast is a great opportunity,” said Cherie’ Kay Thriffiley, director of the office of student engagement and head of the SLC Committee.
In addition to offering sessions and networking opportunities, the conference will feature Chad Crittenden as the keynote speaker. Crittenden appeared on season nine of the television series “Survivor” and was the show’s first amputee contestant. In 2002, doctors removed Crittenden’s right leg at the knee to prevent the spread of a synovial sarcoma tumor. After his appearance on “Survivor,” Crittenden began working with the Challenged Athletes Foundation and the Sarcoma Alliance, hosting and participating in races to help raise money for sarcoma awareness. During his presentation, Crittenden will discuss with students that overcoming obstacles is a normal part of life, using his own experiences as examples.
