Starting this semester, all dorm hall laundry rooms on campus will utilize “Laundry Alert,” a service designed to make washing clothes on campus easier for students.
ASI Campus Laundry Solutions (ASI), a company that provides laundry equipment to more than 400 schools throughout the United States, provides the service.
According to Robin Rodrigue, director of marketing and strategic initiatives for Auxiliary Services, the Laundry Alert service provides resident students with a quick and easy way to monitor the availability of dorm washing machines. Students who sign up for the service will receive an email notification or text message when a resident’s laundry cycle is complete.
“To sign up for the service, resident students go to www.laundryalert.com and enter the sign-in code: SELU3999,” said Rodrigue. “Residents can see which machines are available or in-use by hall and approximately how much time is left on each machine.”
To teach students how to use the new system, “laundry parties” were organized in each dorm hall’s laundry room by University Housing, which is one of the seven Auxiliary Services departments.
“The laundry parties were a huge success,” said Rodrigue. “The residents played games, were educated by the Housing staff on the new machines and Laundry Alert with demonstrations and flyers and also watched a promotional video provided by ASI, entitled ‘Got Dirt.’ ARAMARK provided prizes for each party which included a clothes basket, laundry detergent and fabric softener.”
A major change that accompanies the new system is that some machines no longer accept cash, only Lion’s Lagniappe.
According to Rodrigue, the program is still in its infancy but is doing well regardless. Still, both ASI and University Housing will continue to monitor the program to determine if changes are needed. Also, University Housing has a number of special programs planned for the semester, which will be promoted by the University Housing staff through hall meetings, flyers and email.
