Students will have more options for housing as new apartments, located just off campus, are under construction.
Smith Properties has recently obtained permission from the City of Hammond to build apartments on the lot adjacent to the University Center. The mounds of red clay which can be seen spread over the lot serves as the foundation for the soon to be construction project.
“The apartments will be typical, nice apartments and they will be well-constructed and safe,” said Nash Bono, Building Official for the City of Hammond.
The red clay which is currently spread over the construction site obtains its reddish color as a result of the iron oxide it contains. It is a stable and easily compactible material, commonly used as a building foundation.
Overall, the prospect of extra living space near campus is putting students in a good mood.
“I am thrilled about the new addition of the apartments because it allows more locations for the Southeastern students to live close to campus,” said sophomore Jacob Stagray, double majoring in chemistry and biology. “With these new living opportunities, when the dorms become filled, as they did last semester, the waiting list will not be the only plausible option for the individuals forced to remain commuters.”
Some students view the apartment additions as a way to encourage growth in the Hammond community.
“If the apartments are nice and a decent price, it will be a good thing for our community because they could help draw more people to Hammond, and possibly keep them here after graduation,” said sophomore Claire Salinas, majoring in mass communications and journalism.
