    Coaches clinic to benefit FCA

On Thursday Sept. 30, the coaches of Southeastern Louisiana University are scheduled to hold a coaches clinic benefiting the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization.

The clinic is open to all middle and high school coaches in Tangipahoa Parish, as well as the surrounding area.

The clinic is to be divided into three 90 min sections. With special guest Van Chancellor, women’s basketball coach for LSU speaking during the luncheon portion of the clinic and 90 minutes of basketball afterwards.

“It’s a great way to give back and hopefully something the coaches will enjoy” said coach Jim Yarbrough who came up with the idea after attending an FCA banquet in the spring. “I thought it was a great idea because it’s a worthy cause and such an important aspect of so many students’ lives.”

“I think this is a way to do something we like to do and extend ourselves to the coach community,” said Yarbrough.

The clinic is $25 for participants and all proceeds from the clinic, after expenses, will directly benefit the Southeastern chapter of the FCA.”

“The FCA is relatively new to Southeastern,”  said Bob Engalls, “It has only been around since the end of last semester. So we look forward to doing more here on campus.”

The FCA is the largest sports organization in America. It is student led and seeks to promote faith in local communities by empowering athletes to be strong, not only in their chosen sport but in their faith, by providing support as well as fellowship.

“The organization promotes a belief in Jesus Christ and helps athletes’ develop better character and leadership,” said Gale Neal, former local coach, and one of the promoters of the event. “Any organization that can do that is a great help to the community.”

The FCA has about 40,000 members in the area and reaches about 40 schools locally, but not open only to athletes. Former members of FCA or just those interested in the group are invited to come to the meetings, starting Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the squadron in the athletics department.

“We hope to have a very good turnout.” said Yarbrough. For more information on the clinic contact Yarbrough and for more information on the FCA contact coach Mike Lucas.
